Isle of Echoes- We Witches Three Book Three by Humphrey Quinn

Alright.  Curious One?  I caved.  I absolutely read the third book in the We Witches Three series by Humphrey Quinn.  Isle of Echoes was about the same as the others.  It answered one question and left me with a thousand more.  The most frustrating part is that I want to know what happens to this family, even though I can hardly stand the style of writing.  It’s bugging me so badly!

Isle of Echoes was pretty well rounded in regard to each of the characters, however I am still bewildered that Eva keeps getting to them so easily.  What’s the point of acknowledging your instincts if you ignore them and walk into traps every day?

And did I call Riley and Melinda?!  Ugh.  Totally Romeo and Juliet vibes which is obviously predictable and absolutely annoying.

I Just Don’t Get It!

I just don’t get it Curious One.  How can such a mind blowing and creative storyline be so…boring?  I want to read more and find out what happens to them all and hopefully they all grow up a bit (they seem so childish to me for being in their 20’s) but at the same time it’s so hard to read because of the style and technique used.

So far, they have cut off and began right where you left off, so you should just be reading three larger books instead of fourteen teeny tiny books.

William and Melinda are very annoying.  You get a glimpse into William’s past, so I can understand his apprehension towards loving a human again, but seriously, it took him how long to figure out that she was in love with him and that he was in love with her?  Just… for a 400+ year-old vampire he certainly is not the brightest.  And why does he have such hard times controlling his blood thirst around her?  Is my earlier assumption correct?  Is he going to have to turn her to save her or something equally dramatic?  Just curious. Oh, and they are all so obsessive and angry about the Deanes.  I mean, I get it, there was a massive battle because they were all betrayed by the Deanes who were their oldest friends all because they were dabbling in black magic, but come on.  Both sides lost people and it happened 70 years ago.  The current generation can’t be blamed for the deeds of their ancestors any more than the Howard’s can.

Does Isle of Echoes Give Too Much Drama?

The whole mentality of no one being able to change and be good when their parents were bad is so ridiculous.  The books don’t REALLY need more drama and you know that it’s gonna cause some stupid issue in Melinda and Riley’s relationship.  Melinda is gonna fully blame Riley for not being honest with her when she didn’t tell him she was a Howard any more than he told her he was a Deane.  Just… ugh… I’m eyerolling over here.  Hahah!

Isle of Echoes centers around the bloodsucking leeches that they saw in the Sea Hag’s cave during book one.  The mermaids are under attack from them and came to the Howard’s for help.  Charlie falls for the trap, taking the bait Eva laid out, not even realizing that the one mermaid was Eva herself.  Emily, who breathed in the last breath of a dying mermaid became a mermaid herself, taking in the mermaid’s essence.  She heard in her mind the thoughts of her fellow mermaids and was able to save Charlie.  The fake mermaid, Eva, was trying to convince Charlie to take his protective ring off.

When all this began, Melinda was on a date with Riley when she got the call to go help William and the sheriff and William sees her and Riley when she was dropped off and his face betrays his hurt at her being with someone else, so of course Melinda sees it and it causes even more awkwardness.

So, Melinda and William are trying to take out the bloodsuckers on a beach, Charlie and Emily are on their way and Michael is racing to get to the beach as well to make sure Emily is okay.

Michael and Emily were with Eva’s father when the mermaid was being attacked by the bloodsuckers, which caused her death and Emily’s subsequent mermaid abilities.  I also called that Michael would get upset about how much danger Emily has been in since they got together officially and yeah…enough said.  Predictable.

Anyways, they take on the bloodsuckers with the help of the mermaids and kill them all.  The mermaids also save Emily from a fate in the ocean when she wanted to remain a human and stay on land with Michael.  All she had to do was sing into a shell and the mermaid essence left her body (they had until sunset to keep Emily from permanently being a mermaid).  It reminded me of Ariel in The Little Mermaid, only it wasn’t a sea witch taking her voice.  Just her mermaid essence.

You also get yet another glimpse into Eva and her father.  They are obviously people of evil intentions.  They want to strip the Howard’s of their magic so they can “win.”  Who knows what they want to win though.  The war?  The all-elusive power source?  Control of the island?  Who knows…

Concluding Curiosity on Isle of Echoes

In the end, Isle of Echoes was fittingly another installment in the We Witches Three series.  I tried to do a bit of research on Humphrey Quinn, but I couldn’t really find anything.  She used to run a blog where I found a final post saying that she had to shut down her publishing business and quit writing.  It makes me sad, because her ideas are so amazing and I of course would love to read another series, hoping her style is different or technique is changed.

I’ve said before that I’m not a picky reader and I certainly can still claim that, even after starting to write up my thoughts on books I’m currently reading.  It really sucks that she had to shut down after a ten-year run, but I hope she is doing okay and still fulfilling a dream.  Dreams are what gives us purpose and the desire to live.  If we give up on dreams and don’t let them change and grow with us, we tend to get overly emotional and struggle to want to live.  Such is the human way.

As always, I hope you are living a beautiful dream of your own, Curious One and this discussion finds you in happy health.  Isle of Echoes was as expected and though I probably won’t continue to read the series, I absolutely adored the premise and plotlines of each character so far.  Let me know if you continue to read it and what you think of the ending!  Perhaps you can convince me to finish the series and do a quick write up!  Hahah!

…it’s time for another book…
